Assumptions & Sources

Assumptions

  • System sizing: The two modes size differently. Quick mode reads tonnage off a home-size tier table rather than dividing by a fixed figure — the tiers it offers imply 533 to 786 sqft per ton, and the climate zone then adjusts that tonnage again. Professional mode divides your exact square footage by 500, or uses the tonnage you enter and ignores climate. Neither is a substitute for a professional Manual J calculation, which is what should actually size the equipment.
  • SEER ratings: 14 SEER minimum as of Jan 2023 for most US regions. Higher efficiency = higher cost but lower operating costs.
  • Labor rates: Based on 2025-2026 national averages for licensed HVAC technicians.
  • Ductwork: Costs vary significantly based on home layout, access, and materials.
  • Permits: Required in most jurisdictions for HVAC work. Verify local requirements.
